GRENADA IS SET to take on the world! Head of marketing at the Grenada Tourist Board, Naline Joseph, revealed that about US$116 940 000 was spent in the upgrade, renovation and construction of facilities over the past 17 months since the destruction of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily in 2004. She was speaking last Friday at Grand Barbados Beach Resort in St Michael at the Let's Go Grenada 2006 regional promotion. She told travel professionals and tourism officials it was in keeping with the mandate to "build back bigger and better". The five-star Spice Island Beach Resort, with 64 "elegantly appointed rooms", at a cost of US$12 million, was opened about two weeks, while US$45 million went towards the construction of a welcome centre and shopping plaza on Melville Street. About 25 out of 35 shops were opened there, and shopping outlets at the Excel Plaza, Spice Land Mall, and Grand Anse Vendors Market were also enhanced. Blue Horizons Garden Resort, Fox Inn and the Grenadian by Rex Resort were also renovated. She said there were 1 500 rooms available for visitors which represents more than 85 per cent of the total room stock in Grenada. Joseph pointed out her country was busy preparing for Cricket World Cup 2007 with hopes of having a state-of-the-art multi purpose national stadium to accommodate 15 500 people completed by year-end.
