Jamaica has its first female Prime Minister. After much pomp and ceremony 60-year-old Portia Simpson-Miller was yesterday sworn in as Prime Minister by Governor-General Professor Kenneth Hall at KingÕs House, the official residence of the governor-general in Kingston. Simpson-Miller took over the reins of the ruling PeopleÕs National Party from P.J. Patterson, who led Jamaica for the past 14 years. Here, she displays the instrument of office and waves to the audience of more than 6 000 after she was declared Prime Minister of Jamaica. (Picture by Bryan Cummings/Jamaica Observer)
