A FOREIGN ENVIRONMENTAL safety consultant has expressed surprise there has not been more workplace deaths in Barbados. Senior consultant with Canada-based company Resource Environmental Associates (REA), Jennifer Stoneman, said during her time here, she had seen various safety infractions on construction sites such as exposed wiring and improperly constructed scaffolds. "Based on the anecdotes by the participants, confined space entry is also a problem where there is limited access or egress for an area which can be potentially dangerous," she said. Stoneman was the facilitator at a recent health and safety committee certification training course at Island Inn hotel, Aquatic Gap, St Michael. She stressed the importance of equipment to test the air for gases as not every gas was detectable by the human senses. Business assistant with REA Envirohealth International [the local branch of REA], Corlis Weekes-Grazette, said it was the fourth set of certification courses done by the company since last year. (CA)
