INTERNATIONAL VOLLEYBALL returns to the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium tonight and for the next four nights with the launch of the inaugural VolleyBarbados Championships Series. The series will feature two Canadian teams in Montreal University Carabins and Ryerson University Rams along with Western Connecticut State University Colonials from the United States and Team Barbados. Volleyball fans starved for international top quality action, will have plenty to feast on to start the new year as the respective line-ups of some of the participating teams consist of players with professional experience. Montreal University Carabins boasts in their lineup 26 year old French International Laetitia Tchoualack who won the European Cup in 2002 with the Racing Club of Cannes (France). Not to be outdone, Barbados' most decorated female player over the last two years, Shari Matthews, will be using this tournament as a final warm-up before heading off to Europe next week for trials with professional clubs in Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovania, Austria and Italy in a bid to secure a professional contract. Action starts at 6:30 p.m. each day and admission is $5 for the preliminary matches Wednesday to Friday and $10 for the finals on Saturday night. The VolleyBarbados Championships 2008 is presented by Leisure Entertainment in conjuction with the Barbados Volleyball Association and is sponsored by the Barbados Tourism Authority, Gymnasium Limited, Gatorade, Cooperators General Insurance, Live Sound Entertainment Inc, Weisers Beach Bar, Goddards Enterprises, Barbados National Bank, The Barbados Olympic Association and the National Sports Council.
